Mel-Low: Desktop Music Companion (Open Source)
A downloadable tool for Windows
Mel-Low is a lightweight Windows desktop overlay avatar that vibes with your music in real time.
Mel-Low lives in the corner of your screen, listens to whatever's playing through your system audio, and reacts — head bobs, mood-based chat bubbles, personality quirks, the works. No microphone needed, no setup required, no internet connection, no accounts, no data sent anywhere. Just drop it on your desktop and hit play.
What it does:
- Detects beats and energy from any audio playing on your PC
- Five moods — Silence, Quiet, Vibing, Hype, and Intense — that shift with the music
- Chat bubbles that match its mood, time of day, and even what day of the week it is
- Remembers if you poke it too much or hold it for too long (it will bring it up)
- Drag it anywhere on screen, customize its colors, and tune its settings
100% offline — everything runs locally on your machine. No telemetry, no cloud, no nonsense.
Windows 10 / 11 only — transparent overlay, WASAPI loopback audio capture, and system volume awareness are all Windows-specific.
Mel-Low is fully open source. If you want to dig into how the beat detection works, add new phrases, or just see how a transparent desktop overlay is built in Unity — the repo is open and PRs are welcome.
